Personal Stylist: Sustainable Wardrobe Champion

With Earth Day here many of us will turn our focus to our fashion footprint. And so we should! The pace of production is far outpacing demand meaning closets, donation centres, thrift stores and, sadly, landfills are overflowing with our “cheap and cheerful” impulse buys.

If we’re serious about changing our consumption habits and building a more purposeful wardrobe, there is no better resource than a personal stylist

They’re the Experts

A stylist lives and breathes fashion daily, from scouring the latest social style accounts to poring over every detail of the runway shows. People hire accountants for their expertise, and a personal stylist satisfies that same need. We know our fabrics inside and out so we know what is worth the investment and what will show wear and quickly need to be replaced - no matter the price point. A stylist can help you think through how each piece fits into your existing wardrobe so you make thoughtful decisions.

Slow and Steady

When you’re working with a stylist they will show you where your money is best spent. You’re no longer buying pieces blindly hoping they might work. You know for certain each item fits, flatters and works for you. No emergency shopping trips ahead of events. No impluse buys you just cross your fingers will suit. Slow and steady you’re build a wardrobe that matches where you’re at.

Take Stock

I recommend an annual closet edit for most of my clients. It’s an audit of sorts. Styles and bodies change what we need from our clothes can change too. A little stop and see helps take stock of what’s there, what’s missing and carefully strategize what should be added.

So if the idea of a sustainable closet feels daunting (the supply chains, the petroleum-based fabrics, the planned obsolescence - it’s a lot to take it!). What we can do is take careful steps in the right direction. And a personal stylist is the guide to get you there.
