Gifting Vintage This Holiday Season

Gift something used? Is that gauche?

If you shop vintage for yourself it’s because you know when you find that special piece it’s a one of a kind treasure. Why not try sharing that sense of wonder with a friend this holiday season?

Trinkets Galore

We know there is more than enough stuff already circulating in the world. Big box stores don’t need our dollars. Know what does have that special “I picked this just for you energy” AND puts money into the local economy? Second hand pieces!

All anyone really wants to give or receive is something special that speaks to the relationship and hits a thoughtful chord. Not all used items are of similar quality and not all may be appropriate for gift giving. To avoid any missteps try to keep these simple tips:

Does it Shine?

Does it look like it’s giftable? I mean, I love a good patina as much as the next gal, but make sure whatever you choose is ready to give. If it needs a little TLC don’t hesitate to spend the time and effort to restore it to it’s original glory. Your special gift will have even more meaning with a little personal attention!

Lean In to Decades Past

If you’re going to gift a vintage piece why not lean into that and find the most typically 70s pottery you can find?! Make sure the item you’re gifting cannot be mistaken for a contemporary replica. Whether is a cardigan with some vintage detailing or an ashtray from a bygone era, let the vintage of the item play centre stage.

Find the Vibe

If you’re like me you find it easy to get caught up in the thrill of the find and although it may be the best paint by numbers cat you’ve ever set eyes on, will it find a place of pride in it’s new home? Just because you love it doesn’t mean everyone will love it. Keep in mind where it’s going and how it will fit in with their wardrobe, décor or aesthetic.

Ask the Experts

Finally, if this is your first season gifting something second hand, make it easy on yourself by skipping the thrift store and instead finding your way to your closest antique mall or vintage shop. These stores have a curated selection of used and antique pieces so finding that special something will be a whole lot easier! Look for memorable pieces that bring joy and I know your loved ones will adore your thoughtfully chosen one-of-a-kind gift.
